Off The Map - great movie!

I have been watching a lot of movies lately, as I'm recovering from a full hysterectomy. I have got to recommend to you a movie that is wonderful! I saw it weeks ago, and I still find myself thinking about the scenes and characters. The scenery was breath-taking and the acting was superb! Have I used enough adjectives to convince you to go rent it yet?

In Campbell Scott's OFF THE MAP, the poetry of a time and a place marked by simplicity comes into full bloom. It's 1974 and the harshly beautiful wilds of Taos are home to 11-year-old Bo Groden (Valentina de Angelis) and her free-thinking family.

While constantly yearning for escape from her sparse environment, Bo passes the time with flair and imagination. She's a crack shot with a rifle and a bow and arrow, an artful plunderer of wallets and briefcases, and the compelling mistress of ceremonies for a moonlit three-ring circus of her own invention. Bo's home is an entrancing, challenging place that she will one day transcend to become the woman she was destined to be.

Arlene (Joan Allen), Bo's warm, earthy, and eccentric mother, raises most of the family's food in her vegetable garden -- which she prefers to tend in the nude. Meanwhile, Bo's father, Charley (Sam Elliott), the embodiment of Old West masculinity, is losing the battle with his inner demons.

When William Gibbs (Jim True-Frost) arrives, a hapless IRS agent with demons of his own, he soon proves to be a catalyst in the lives of the family during this watershed summer.

You Kill Me movie critique

Frank Falenczyk (Ben Kingsley) loves his job. He just happens to be the hit-man for his Polish mob family in Buffalo, N.Y. But, Frank's got a drinking problem and he messes up a critical assignment that puts the family business in peril.

I liked the dark humor. It's a good movie and Ben is great!

Neverwas movie

A Yale graduate gets a job at the mental institution where his novelist father spent the last years of his life. Once there, he meets a schizophrenic man who proves a mysterious link to his father's material.

Good movie - this is a psychological drama, portraying our humanity and our reality vs. fantasy. On a dark side, but with an uplifting ending.

Movie Critquie - 40 year old virgin

Totally bad. Yuck. Adolescent boys probably love this one - if simply for the raunchiness.

Movie Critique - Friends With Money

Tale of four west coast, life-long friends, who have achieved a level of comfort in their lives and have now settled into a life of designer clothes, charity events, and caring for the men (and offspring) in their lives. But as they approach 'a certain age,' unsettling things are starting to throw their comfortable lives off balance.

This is a nice chick-flick, rated R because of sexual content and drugs - both of which were totally unnecessary to show on-screen. Not for children, but ok for mature adults, which that alone could leave out 1/2 of the adult population, if ya know what I mean. ;-)

Movie Critique - Dan in real life

LOVE this movie! But mostly, I "heart" that magnificent house in Rhode Island. The movie is totally a chic-flic and that's ok by me - I enjoyed every minute of this and you will too.

Movie Critique - The Holidays

I love looking at homes. This one is from the movie The Holiday, with Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet. This is set in England. I love the 2 fireplaces and the interior is warm and cozy. Would be great for a vacation home! I'm dreaming, of course..... And by our modern standards, we'd have that roof replaced in no time. And then, we'd ruin it all by modernizing the whole thing. It's probably good that I don't have the moola for this, huh?

Fall brings out the suspense

When the weather gets a little nip in the air and the sun begins to go down sooner, I find myself reading more. I search out books on the best-selling lists and also I might open up an unread classic. So I thought I'd ask if anyone is reading any good books at the present?

Right now, I'm reading a suspenseful, Dean Koontz book: From the corner of his eye. I'm not one for fiction and it somewhat surprises me that I started this, but I'm glad I did because he writes very well and the story is compelling. I'm delighted to find out that he has written so many! Has anyone else read his works?

The last novel I read was Tuesdays with Morrie. And before that, The Notebook and The Five people you will meet in Heaven. I go through countless books from the library from cookbooks to DIY project books to autobiographies.
